S.A new study suggests that taking Norvasc could help reduce heart attacks and stroke, especially when used by people with high blood pressure or high blood potassium levels.
Researchers reviewed data from the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS), the biggest health care system in the world, and found that the drug, which was prescribed to millions of people who were at risk for cardiovascular disease, was linked to a greater number of heart attacks and strokes in people taking Norvasc. The study is the first in a series of randomized trials to show this effect in people with high blood pressure and high potassium levels.
"Our data supports the use of Norvasc to reduce cardiovascular risks in people with high blood pressure or high potassium levels," said lead author, a urologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. "We also are in a position to offer a new way to improve the cardiovascular risk profile of people with high blood pressure or high potassium levels."
The study was published online March 6, in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In addition to heart attacks, stroke, and blood pressure, Norvasc has also been shown to reduce heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent in people with a history of cardiovascular disease, according to the NIAAA study. In a separate analysis of the NIAAA study, researchers found that the drug reduced heart attacks and strokes in people with a history of hypertension or hypertension-related cardiovascular disease, as well as the risk of heart attack and stroke by 25 percent.
The researchers also found that the drug reduced heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent in people with a family history of the condition.
In addition, Norvasc reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 25 percent, compared with people who were not taking the drug. The drug did not affect the risk of death from any cause in the study.
The researchers also found that the drug reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent in people with a family history of the condition, as well as the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with a history of hypertension or hypertension-related cardiovascular disease.
"Overall, we think that the current study provides additional evidence that Norvasc could be beneficial for lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with high blood pressure and high potassium levels," said lead author, a urologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
However, the study does not say how much Norvasc would prevent the heart attack and stroke, but says it doesn't yet suggest a direct causal link.
The study was funded by Pfizer, the maker of Norvasc. Pfizer said in a statement: "This is the first large-scale randomized trial to examine the potential benefits of lowering blood pressure and potassium levels in patients with congestive heart failure and heart valve disease."
Norvasc was not licensed for use in the United States, and it was not approved for use in Europe or other countries.
Dr. David Zavitz, director of cardiovascular disease research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, said the study supports the findings of the NIAAA study.
The NIAAA study was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, which makes Norvasc, based in Philadelphia. It was funded by Pfizer, which makes the drug. Pfizer also funded the trial.
About half of the 500 people who took Norvasc were hospitalized for heart attacks, according to a statement from Pfizer, which makes Norvasc. The remaining patients were hospitalized for stroke, according to the statement.
Researchers also found that the drug lowered the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent.
Researchers also noted that Norvasc had not been shown to be effective in preventing heart attacks or strokes, but they did find that the drug reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 25 percent.
"This is an important finding for many patients with high blood pressure and high potassium levels," said lead author, a urologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Norvasc was approved in 1997 by the Food and Drug Administration for treating hypertension and congestive heart failure. The drug is also used in the treatment of angina and other coronary artery disease.
Norvasc was approved for use in the United States in 2007. The drug was initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in patients with high blood pressure or high potassium levels.
The drug was also approved for the treatment of high blood pressure in patients with congestive heart failure, but not in patients with heart disease.
